3-Hour Standoff With Bridgeport Police

According to Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker, a man shot himself and died after a 3-hour standoff with law enforcement. This happened on Cherry St. Saturday.

The man who shot himself had a domestic violence petition against him from his wife. Despite this, he pushed his way into the house with a loaded nine millimeter, according to police.

The woman was able to escape the house and she heard a gunshot at 4:00 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. was when the standoff began.

Officers tried to negotiate with the man from outside of the house, but the attempts were unsuccessful. When they finally made it into the house, the suspect was on the floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have indicated the man has died.

While the standoff was going down, police blocked off surrounding areas preventing people from driving through. There were also neighboring houses that were evacuated.

The woman who was being held is safe and the standoff is over. There were people from Bridgeport Police Department, Bridgeport SRT, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and Bridgeport Fire on the scene.
